SAP! Ok now hear me out on this, I know how this game looks, but it's actually really fun man no joke HAHA. When my friend first introduced this game to me, I quite literally thought he was just being stupid (as per usual). I mean, no way a 2D flash game with the lower graphics then even minecraft could be fun right? WRONG! So strap in kids we are doing this again.

An objective review of why Super Auto Pets (Colloquially referred to as SAP) is a GREAT game

About the game

Alright so I know like almost everyone will not have known about this game’s existence or what its about so lemme give a brief run down.

So SAP is a turn based pet auto battler game  where you create your own unique team of loveable cute animals to viciously attack your opponents pets in a cage deathmatch of which only one shall survive. Here's a few images for reference.

The game mechanics

Alright so now that you know what you're getting into, let's talk about gameplay and how to actually play this game. So you start off each round with a set amount of gold coins. These coins may be used in the animal pet shop to buy various animals each with their own unique ability or Pet food to buff up your animals and make them extra beefy

(because everyone knows animals get +1 HP and Strength from their food which varies from honey to chocolate and even steaks) OK side tangent but i now realize that this is actually a horrible influence, do not feed chocolate to your dogs peoples, despite it beijing a great buff in SAP, it in fact does not buff your dogs in real life! If anything, it very much debuffs them.

Right back to game mechanics, Yes! So you use your gold coins to buy either pets or pet food so manage your currency wisely!

Right next is the leveling up system, yes you can level up your pets in this game too, but it's only for each game you play so you can't actually permanently increase the stats of your pets. By either feeding your pets chocolate (not recommended in real life) and buying and fusing them together to form chimeras like a cerberus, you can level up your pets to increase their Base stats and their abilities. Also each pet is ranked on their tiers. So at the start of the game, you will only be given to tier 1 pets like rats or ants. But as the game progresses, you will gradually be given access to higher tiered pets with higher stats bases and better abilities so choose your strat wisely! Because more often than not, once you commit yourself to a certain pet or strategy then it's very difficult for you to change mid or late game without losing out on a lot of potential team development to your opponent!

Just for additional info pet stats cap at 50/50 for HP and attack, pet levels cap at 3 and you start with 30HP which you will lose if you lose the battle each turn.

Quite a lot of things to consider for a game with the picture quality of a primary schooler's drawings wouldn't you agree?

Great now that we all know what SAP is about, let's into why I think this game is great.

The pets

Screenshot_5.png

Now in case you haven't noticed yet, this game is about animals, because you know super auto PETS. So naturally they have the entire animal kingdom ,or close to it, in their selection from extinct mammoths to tiny protozoa and even mythical dragons, the variety in animals is honestly what makes this game so much fun. Since each pet has its own unique abilities, there are a countably infinite number of different team combinations or strategies that can be employed, and its this variety in game play that makes it so much fun! I mean, I've been playing this game for a few months now and I still haven't even SEEN some of the pets in the picture above yet.

But more importantly, just look at them man.

If this doesn't bring a smile to your face then you're a monster. Ok maybe not a monster but….monster-like.

The naming system OMG

Screenshot_9.png

Another feature that really makes this game is the naming system. Every new game, you’re given an option to customize your in game name using random auto generated words. This has led to some of the funniest names i've seen to date like “The salty housewives” or “The suspicious eggplant” which has been a source of laughter for my friends and I. The fact that the generation of adjectives and nouns are randomized also means that you'll never get the same name twice which adds to the uniqueness of each game and its replayability. I mean, there are times where I would start games just to see what's the funniest name i can create!

Teaches you zoology, math and life skills!

Apart from being remarkably fun, you’d also be surprised to find out that this game also teaches you to be fiscally responsible with your finances and to work under pressure, some very useful qualities if you ask me! Being given only 15 coins each round and having pet foods/pets costing 3 coins per means that you have to be very selective with your purchasing or else you won't have enough. Rerolling pets cost 1 gold coin too, but you can freeze the pets in the bar so that they don’t disappear between turns or rerolling. Hence this game teaches you a great deal about practical skills such as self-control, saving and planning ahead. Furthermore, you’d have to do all this thinking within a minute because that's how much time the game gives for you to make your purchases each turn, so you get to practice working under pressure and quick thinking too! Wow!, who knew one could learn so much from such a simple game!

Furthemore, the wide variety of animals and organisms in this game would also mean that you’ll learn a great deal about different animals. Great for teaching children about zoology!

Buses!

Screenshot_10.png

Yep that's right, buses are a pet now, and they spawn from killing a dear. The more you know I guess? Despite this slightly gaggy feature, its things like this where the mechanics and ability of the pet is unique and unusual that make the game what it is today. I mean who comes up with this stuff? I can imagine the game developers in their chairs and serious suits during their corporate meeting trying to figure out what ability to the dear:

Person 1: “So what ability do you wanna give it?”

Person 2: “Well It has to be something unique that also relates to the characteristics of a deer….When you think of deers what do you think of?”

Person 1: “Them getting hit by vehicles”

Person 2: “Perfect… the deer will spawn a bus!”

I would love to know their thought process for implementing this feature. Regardless though, I wouldn't have it any other way and the bus is my favorite early game strategy to annoy my opponent HAHA.

It's free!

Yeap! You heard me right, you can get all this fun and laughs for absolutely nothing at all! And they say nothing good in life comes for free, well this certainly does! What more can you ask for?

Downsides

Like any great game, there are certain caveats or downsides. I really had to whack my brain on this because I came up with some realistic flaws. Maybe i'm viewing this game through rose tinted glasses, but regardless I think it's a great game! So I employed the help of a few friends, and In collaboration we have come up with 2 downsides to Super Auto Pets

No leveling up system

Right so this may be a pretty big flaw for some, less so for others. For those people that play games for fun and to enjoy themselves and interact with their friends, then this shouldn't be that much of an issue! It only becomes a problem with people that like to play games for the feeling of “progression” like in Minecraft or Clash of Clans where you can see the progress you're making as the level of your character etc go up. But in Super Auto Pets, there isn't any leveling up system, with good reason. I mean it would  be pretty unfair if you’re starting out with high-level pets since it's almost impossible to make up that difference with strategy and planning alone. So that is one aspect which may affect the long term playability of this game for some. However, they do have some pretty cool custom skins that players can play towards! And I'm talking about some really..really cute skins!

Games can be up to an hour long if facing off against sentient players

I think this is less of an issue with this particular game and more of a criticism of most strategy/skill based games in general, such that they get pretty “unfun” to play once you match up against someone sentient that actually knows what they're doing. But to be fair, losing in general isn't fun either!

Verdict? 9.5/10 game highly recommend to play with friends simply for the laughs!

Special thanks to my friend ELLARD and TEAKY for getting me into this game!
